Tropical Depression #4 forms over Cuba with no influence on Costa Rica

Diagnosis: During the course of Friday night, tropical wave #22 that was in the center of the Caribbean Sea has become more organized, as it was declared by the U.S. National Hurricane Center as tropical depression #4 over the island of Cuba and is heading towards Florida; therefore, due to its remoteness and trajectory, this depression will not have any influence over Costa Rica in the next few days.

Even so, in the national territory an ideal environment for moderate intensity precipitations prevails for this day.

Forecast: In general, showers with thunderstorms are forecast along the Pacific coast and part of the Central Valley.

In the Pacific slope, accumulated amounts between 30 mm and 40 mm are expected, with maximum 80 mm near the mountains and in less intensity in the coast.

In the Central Valley, accumulated amounts are expected between 15 mm and 30 mm with maximums of 75 mm occasionally; part of these rains would reach the Caribbean mountains and the Northern Zone.

In the rest of the country, expected rainfall will not exceed 30 mm.

Warning: Soil saturation remains high in the Northern Zone, Caribbean, South Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula, increasing vulnerability in these sectors.   In addition, in urban areas, sewer saturation could lead to flash floods.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

- Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
