Weather Warning
Heavy downpours this Tuesday, due to the strengthening of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country
Octuber 03, 2023
10:00 a.m.
Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone over our territory will be more unstable. In addition, local factors such as contributions of humidity from the Pacific and warm temperatures will be the precursors of heavy downpours with storms during this afternoon and early evening.
In the early morning and morning, occasional showers occurred over coastal sectors of the Pacific, such as the Nicoya Peninsula and the Osa Peninsula. The amounts so far are less than 45 mm.
Forecast: In the afternoon, the presence of these precipitations is expected in the mountains of the South Pacific, Central Pacific, and Central Valley (to the north, east and south). Specifically in sectors such as Coto Brus, Corredores Buenos Aires, Zona de los Santos, Valle del General, Parrita and also in San José, Heredia, south and west of Cartago, southern sectors bordering the Capital. The estimated amounts in 12 hours will be between 35 - 55 mm with specific maximums between 70 - 100 mm. These precipitations can appear towards the early hours of the night.
By the end of the afternoon, scattered showers with storms will appear in low and coastal sectors of the Central and South Pacific, in addition to incorporating regions of the central and eastern North Pacific, along with the Northern Zone. The estimated amounts will be between 30 - 50 mm with specific maximums of up to 70 mm.
For the Caribbean regions, rain and showers with occasional storms are possible, this throughout the afternoon in the central and western parts. Estimated amounts between 10 - 15 mm with maximums of 40 mm.
Warning: Special attention in sectors of the Nicoya Peninsula and Osa Peninsula, where rainfall may be recurring these two days, with the possibility of generating incidents. In addition, mountainous sectors of the North Zone and South Pacific with saturated soil prone to landslides in vulnerable sectors.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases.
