Weather Warning (Update)
Variable rains this Tuesday and movement of tropical wave #8 next Wednesday
June 11, 2024
5.34 pm
Diagnosis: Atmospheric instability and high humidity content persist in the region. The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains active and close to the national territory. During the morning there were rains in coastal sectors of the North Pacific and South Pacific; these were not significant, amounts below 20 mm.
In the last 6 hours there have been showers with storms and rains of variable intensity in Pococí and Guácimo, as well as in Sarapiquí, plains of San Carlos, northern Guanacaste and in isolated sectors of the Central and South Pacific. The highest amounts have been recorded in the North Caribbean with maximums of 55 mm.
Forecast: Current atmospheric conditions anticipate rains of variable intensity during part of the night. During the night period, rainfall will decrease in the aforementioned regions, persisting during the first hours towards coastal areas of the Central and South Pacific mainly. Maximum amounts are estimated between 10 mm and 50 mm; higher amounts may occur locally. Regarding tropical wave #8, it is located west of Panama and it is expected that the instability of the Intertropical Convergence Zone will increase this Wednesday, generating an ideal environment for rain in maritime sectors bordering our country in the Pacific and Caribbean. This could cause coastal rainfall in the early morning and/or morning period. Likewise, its passage would reinforce the afternoon showers in the mountains of the Caribbean, Northern Zone and Pacific.
Warning: The rains projected for urban sectors may again be precursors of flooding and sewer saturation in sectors that are already recurring. Saturated soils are being monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the Northern Zone, as well as central and northern Guanacaste.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention during thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
