Weather Warning

Tropical wave #8 moving over the country this Wednesday

June 12, 2024
10.00 a.m.

Discussion: Tropical wave #8 is over the national territory, this system and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone will cause favorable conditions for the generation of rainy activity of variable intensity in the different regions of the country during this afternoon and night.

Forecast: Precipitation will begin around noon, continuing during the afternoon and part of the night; it will start over the mountainous axis and will gradually extend towards the lower parts.

Heavy rain and downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the Northn Zone, North Pacific, and Caribbean mountains, with an estimated accumulation of 30-80 mm in 6-hour periods, and higher amounts are possible in a localized manner. In the Central Valley, as well as in the Central and South Pacific, rain of varying intensity with thunderstorms is expected, with amounts between 20-50 mm and punctual maximums of 60-80 mm, in 6-hour periods.

As mentioned, rainy activity will extend into the night period in the Northern Zone and Pacific regions, gradually decreasing in intensity and distribution. In the Central Valley and Caribbean mountains, light rain and fog banks are expected.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be the precursors of flooding and sewer saturation in sectors that have already occurred. Saturated soils are recorded in the province of Cartago, cantons south of San José, the Sarapiquí Basin and the entire North Zone, as well as in the North and South Pacific, and mountains in the Central Pacific, making these regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
