Meteorological Warning

Affected by cold surge # 22 will persist this Saturday

March 7, 2020
9:00 am

Diagnosis: Cold push # 22 continues its transit through the Central American region, thus affecting the weather over the region. In the early hours of this Saturday there have been strong gusts between 70-90 km / h in the north of Guanacaste and mountain ranges of the national territory, while in the lower parts of the North Pacific and Central Valley they range between 40-65 km / h. In addition, the drag of moisture from the Caribbean Sea has generated variable cloudiness with rains and drizzles in the North, North Caribbean and mountains in the north of the country with maximum accumulated amounts of 12 mm in 6 hours.

Forecast: Accelerated wind will prevail throughout central and northern Costa Rica throughout this day with maximum gusts between 50-70 km / h in the lower parts of the Central Valley and Guanacaste and between 70-100 km / h for the North of Guanacaste and the mountains of the country.

Regarding rainfall, it is expected that conditions of variable cloudiness for the Caribbean slope with intermittent rains of intensity between weak and moderate are expected to continue, the accumulated ones are estimated between 10-40 mm. For the rest of the country, occasional rains are foreseen in the mountainous sectors and its surroundings with projected accumulations between 1-5 mm.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  •     Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: CR National Meteorological Institute and the Website: www.imn.ac.cr
