Weather Warning

Heavy showers and thunderstorms this afternoon in the Pacific

August 2nd, 2024
11.40 a.m.

Discussion: The entry of humidity from maritime sectors, added to warm morning temperatures, will favor cloud development this afternoon, generating rainy and electrical activity between moderate and strong intensity and may extend into the early hours of the night.

Forecast: During this afternoon and early evening, heavy rain and downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the Pacific regions, with amounts estimated between 30 mm and 70 mm in periods of 6-12 hours, with possible higher accumulations in a localized manner.

Meanwhile, in the Central Valley, mountainous parts of the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, scattered rains are expected, with accumulations between 10-40 mm in periods of 6-12 hours. Occasional rains are possible in the Caribbean and Northern Zone during the course of the night period.

This Saturday, the passage of tropical wave #22 is expected, although the cloudiness and instability associated with this system moves over the Greater Antilles, the effects of this broad disturbance can lead to an ideal environment for precipitation in the national territory; during the morning in the Caribbean and the North Zone, in the afternoon in regions of the Pacific and Central Valley.

Warning: High soil saturation levels remain in the North Zone, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, increasing vulnerability in these areas. In addition, in urban areas, sewage saturation could lead to flash flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
