Weather Warning

Windy conditions persist this week

February 4, 2025
10:40 a.m.

Diagnosis: High levels of atmospheric pressure north of the Caribbean Sea basin favor windy conditions in the national territory. This Tuesday, maximum gusts between 60 km/h and 89 km/h were recorded in central and northern Guanacaste. In the Central Valley and other central mountainous areas, between 40 km/h and 72 km/h. Mostly stable conditions are present in the national territory, with no significant rainfall in the last 12 hours.

Forecast: Atmospheric pressure will remain high for much of this week, which favors the occurrence of strong to very strong gusts towards the mountains, in the center and north of the national territory on Tuesday. In the lower areas of the Central Valley and the North Pacific, gusts of between 30 km/h and 60 km/h are expected, while in the north of Guanacaste and the mountains, gusts of between 60 km/h and 95 km/h are expected (with the possibility of occasional slightly higher gusts in these areas). On the other hand, this Tuesday, the country will be mostly stable. However, it is possible that the incursion of cloudiness towards the south of the South Pacific in the afternoon will generate scattered showers, with accumulations close to 30 mm in periods of 3 to 6 hours.

Warning: Special attention in the mountains and in the surrounding low areas, due to the presence of strong to very strong gusts.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention due to wind gusts and their possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.

• Avoid fires of any kind, as they can get out of control.

• Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding, as well as increased flow in rivers and streams.
