Indirect influence of Tropical Depression No. 18 (DT 18)

Diagnosis: The previous potential tropical cyclone number 18 has been declared as DT 18. The system is located 550 km east of the northern Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. According to the analysis, DT 18 will continue to strengthen as it moves northwest, towards Jamaica, at a speed of 14.8 km/h and sustained winds of 55 km/h.
As reported, this disturbance is inducing a flow of humid winds from the Pacific Ocean towards our country. This morning intermittent rainfall has been recorded on the Pacific side. The most significant amounts since 7:00 a.m. have occurred in coastal areas of the Pacific such as: Paquera, Puntarenas, Cabuya, Tamarindo, Quepos, Parrita, Puerto Jimenez with amounts between 2 mm and 22 mm. In the mountains of the Central Valley and surrounding areas, light rains are occurring.
Forecast: Intermittent rain and cloudy conditions will continue throughout the day in coastal areas of the Pacific, with amounts between 30 mm and 60 mm, and maximums between 60 mm and 120 mm in periods of 6-12 hours. In mountainous areas and plains of the Pacific, rain is possible, especially during the afternoon and early evening, with amounts between 20 mm and 50 mm, and maximums between 50 mm and 80 mm.
In the Central Valley, cloudy conditions and scattered rain of light intensity are expected during the rest of the morning. In the afternoon, intermittent rain is possible in most of the region. The estimated amounts in periods of 6-12 hours are between 20 mm and 50 mm, with higher maximums in a localized manner.
During the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are possible in the Caribbean and mountains of the Northern Zone. Intense, short-term rains are likely in these areas, and some of the rains may reach the Caribbean plains. Some of these rains will continue during the night. Estimated amounts are between 10 mm and 40 mm, with maximums located between 40 mm and 70 mm.
The indirect influence of this tropical cyclone on Costa Rica will be present until Tuesday, with the possibility of extending to Wednesday in the North Pacific.
Warning: Saturated soils are present in most of the mountainous regions along with low-lying areas of the Pacific, with special attention to high saturation values in the Central/South Pacific, South Caribbean, Central Valley and Northern Zone, so the possibility of incidents is high.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
