Weather Warning (Update)

Downpours with a thunderstorms this afternoon

October 07, 2024
5:20 p.m.

Diagnosis: The position and activation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone has been causing rain and thunderstorms in the western Caribbean regions, in the center and east of the Northern Zone and in parts of the Central Valley and the Northern Pacific. So far, accumulations of between 50 - 80 mm have been recorded around Sarapiquí, 30 mm on Route 32, Turrialba and Talamanca, in addition to 50 mm on the Orosi Volcano and between 10 - 30 mm for the Pacific regions.

Forecast: The rest of the afternoon will continue to see scattered showers with thunderstorms in the Northern Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, with accumulations between 30 - 60 mm with punctual maximums between 60 - 80 mm. Similar amounts are anticipated for the mountains and nearby surrounding areas of the Northern Pacific. For the east of the Central Valley, Central and South Pacific, scattered rains and showers are estimated with accumulations between 10 - 30 mm and maximums of around 65 mm. The probability of variable rains is estimated in the early hours of this Tuesday, for the Pacific coasts and peninsular sectors.

Warning: Soil saturation conditions continue in the North Zone and Guanacaste. Also in the entire central mountainous part of the country. Saturated soils are also recorded in both peninsulas in the Pacific. This situation indicates a risk of incidents due to sewer saturation, river flooding or landslides in areas where the occurrence of rain is estimated during this day.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
