Weather Warning (Update)

Unstable conditions remain over our country this afternoon and evening

October 09, 2024
4:30 p.m.

Diagnosis: We continue with a high humidity content in the country, which is being caused by the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the systems in the middle and upper atmosphere. Accumulations since 7:00 a.m. by region are in the following ranges:

• Northern Zone between 15-30 mm.
• Northern Caribbean between 5-20 mm.
• Southern Caribbean between 10-20 mm, with a maximum of 42 mm at the Turrialba Volcano.
• Northern Pacific between 10-40 mm, with a maximum of 64 mm in Hojancha.
• Central Pacific and Southern Pacific between 10-40 mm, with a maximum of 50 mm in Ciudad Neily.
• Central Valley between 15-45 mm, especially in sectors to the south.

Forecast: For the rest of the afternoon today, showers with storms are expected to continue in the Northern Zone and the western Caribbean. The estimated accumulated rainfall would be between 10 - 30 mm with maximum rainfall of 30 - 60 mm. In the case of the Pacific regions, variable rainfall with occasional storms is expected, especially in coastal areas. The accumulated rainfall would be between 10 - 30 mm with maximum rainfall of 60 mm. On the other hand, in the Central Valley, intermittent rainfall is expected with accumulated rainfall varying between 10-30 mm.

Warning: Very saturated soil conditions continue throughout the central mountainous part of the country on both sides, the Central Valley and in low areas of both peninsulas in the Pacific. In addition, a large part of the Northern Zone registers high saturation values. This situation indicates a risk of incidents due to saturation of sewers, flooding of rivers or landslides in areas where the occurrence of rainfall is estimated during this day.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
