Weather Warning (Update)

Downpours with a thunderstorms this Monday in several areas of the country

June 10, 2024
5:40 p.m.

Diagnosis: Unstable atmospheric conditions will persist this Monday in central and southern Central America, due to the activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the very high humidity content. In the afternoon there have been showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the Central Valley and the Pacific slope. The highest accumulations so far are between: 20 - 40 mm with maximums of 70 mm (Santa Barbara and Ochomogo) for the Central Valley, between 10 - 30 mm with maximums of 50 mm for both the Central Pacific and the South Pacific, and accumulations of less than 25 mm for the Caribbean and the Northern Zone.

Forecast: In the Central Valley, the persistence of rain of strong to moderate intensity is estimated towards the east of the region, but gradually decreasing to weak intensity in the early hours of the night. Amounts between 10 - 40 mm are expected with possible higher localized amounts. During the late afternoon, in the Central Pacific, South Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula, variable showers with thunderstorms are expected in low-lying areas and towards coastal areas at the beginning of the night period. Maximum amounts estimated between 40 - 70 mm.

Warning: Saturated soils are monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, in addition to both peninsulas. The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of occurrence or perception of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
