Aviso Meteorológico

Lluvias y tormenta eléctrica durante la tarde y noche y onda tropical #18 para este jueves

10 de julio de 2024
10.15 a.m.

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains close to the region, which contributes significant moisture content to the environment. This favors cloudiness in the surroundings of the country, as well as precipitation. This morning, cloud developments have entered from the Caribbean Sea, generating rain and storms that are projected towards the province of Limón and the Northern Zone, precipitation records range between 5-20 mm in the last 6 hours. Tropical wave #18 is located around 80°W (Panama) and is moving westward, getting closer and closer to Costa Rica.

Forecast: For the rest of the morning, there will be cloudiness and rain in the Caribbean and mountainous parts of the Northern Zone, with amounts estimated between 10-20 mm.

The heaviest precipitation events will occur during the afternoon, starting over the mountainous axis and gradually extending to the lower parts.

In detail, for the Central Valley, rains of varying intensity and possible thunderstorms are expected, the heaviest in sectors of the North and West. Accumulations are estimated between 20-50 mm in 6-hour periods. For the North Pacific, the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, heavy rains and downpours with thunderstorms are anticipated (with a greater probability of occurring in the second part of the afternoon), amounts between 30 mm and 70 mm in 6-hour periods, higher accumulations are possible in a localized manner. In the Central and South Pacific, isolated showers are expected around the mountain ranges and border area with Panama, extending towards coastal areas. Estimated amounts are between 10 mm and 50 mm. During the night, rain and possible storms are expected in the Caribbean, the North Zone and coastal parts of the Pacific.

Tropical wave #18 is expected to enter during the early hours of Thursday, its effects will be felt throughout the day, causing rain of varying intensity first in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone (early morning and morning of Thursday); in the afternoon, the Pacific and Central Valley regions will continue to experience episodes of rain and storms.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are recorded in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the Northern Zone and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, making them regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
