Aviso Meteorológico
Strong winds persist on this day
January 15, 2020
07.30 a.m.
Discussion: Strong windy conditions prevail on this day over the country, a situation generated by a high-pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean which maintains high atmospheric pressure levels over the Central American region. The most intense gusts are perceived in the north of Guanacaste with maximums of 108 km/h, meanwhile in the lower parts of the North Pacific and Central Valley they are around 50-85 km/h. In addition, weak rains appear in the North Zone and the Caribbean with amounts less than 15 mm.
Forecast: The strong winds will continue during this day, maximum speeds are estimated between 50-110 km/h in the mountain ranges of the country, while in the lower parts of the Central Valley and the North Pacific maximum between 40-85 km/h. A slight decrease in the intensity and frequency of the gusts is expected between Thursday and Friday.
As for rainfall, they will manifest themselves intermittently during the course of Wednesday in the Caribbean and North Zone regions with accumulated between 10-50 mm. Occasional light showers and light rains are possible in the mountain ranges and its surroundings with amounts less than 5 mm.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
- Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
