Weather Warning

Intense downpours in the north of the country

May 20, 2020
3.30 pm

Diagnosis: This Wednesday continues the high moisture content in the region, this factor combined with the high temperatures in the national territory; In addition to the atmospheric instability caused by the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, it is promoting intense downpours with an electrical storm in the north and center of the country, the highest accumulated at this time are in Upala, with a record of 80 mm, thus same 55 mm in Cañas, 36 mm in La Garita and 30 mm in Iztarú.

Forecast: The intense rainy activity with a storm that occurs in the north of the country will continue throughout the afternoon, especially in the Northern Zone.

For this afternoon and early evening, showers of varying intensity and showers with thunderstorms are expected on the Pacific side. The most intense activity is expected for the areas in the vicinity of the mountainous parts, as well as in and around the Nicoya and Osa peninsulas.

On the other hand, in the Central Valley and the Caribbean, rains and showers with an electrical storm are expected. For its part, for the coastal parts of the Caribbean, occasional rains of moderate intensity are anticipated for the remainder of the day.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, as well as sectors prone to landslides.
• Prevention on national routes such as: route 1, route 10, route 27, route 21, route 32, route 34, route 141 and route 126.
• Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
