Weather Warning

Showers due to instability this afternoon -Update-

September 21, 2023
4.00 p.m.

Discussion: There is a mostly cloudy sky over the national territory. The proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country has generated rain this afternoon in the North Zone and mountainous sectors of the North Pacific. With maximum accumulations of 35 mm in the Northern Zone and 15 mm in the North Pacific.

Forecast: For the rest of the day, these rains and downpours with storms are forecast to continue in sectors of the North Zone and mountains and border sectors of the North Pacific. Those accumulated in the next 6 hours will range between 10 – 30 mm with possible localized maximums.

The Central Pacific and South Pacific will present isolated rains in mountainous sectors with possible accumulations between 5 - 15 mm and possible maximums located in mountainous sectors.

For the Caribbean, a mostly cloudy sky is expected with rain in sectors bordering Nicaragua. Accumulation of between 5-15 mm is estimated in the next 6 hours.

The Central Valley still has a chance of rain to the west, with accumulations between 5-10 mm and possible maximums located in the mountains.

Warning: Special attention to mountainous sectors of the North Zone and North Pacific. This is due to saturated soil conditions, which increases the probability of landslides.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases.
