Weather Warning
Tropical wave #21 passes over Costa Rica this Saturday
July 27, 2024
09.20 a.m.
Discussion: The entry of tropical wave #21 this morning and the activity associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone have accentuated very humid and unstable atmospheric conditions in the country. This favored rains during the early morning in the Nicoya Peninsula, Central Pacific and Caribbean coasts, with maximum accumulations between 30-90 mm, to a lesser extent there was rain recorded in the Central Valley (Eastern sector) and Northern Zone, with amounts between 5-15 mm.
Forecast: Cloud cover and light to moderate rains, with possible scattered thunderstorms, will continue for the rest of the morning in the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions, with estimated amounts between 20-40 mm. Possibility of light rain and drizzle in high parts of the Central Valley and also towards the province of Cartago, as well as on the Pacific coast, with estimated accumulations between 1-10 mm.
During the afternoon and early evening, heavy rains and downpours are expected with isolated thunderstorms in the Pacific regions, with estimated amounts between 60-100 mm in 6-hour periods. For the Central Valley, Northern Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, rains of varying intensity are expected, with possible thunderstorms, with accumulated amounts between 30-60 mm in 6-hour periods.
In addition, fog banks are possible at the end of the afternoon and beginning of the night period in the Central Valley and mountainous areas.
Warning: Saturation of extremely high ground in the Northern Zone, Caribbean, South Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula, increasing vulnerability in these areas. In addition, in urban areas, saturation of sewage systems could lead to flash flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
