Very intense winds will continue this Thursday
March 07, 2019
Discussion: The levels of atmospheric pressure continue high over the Central American region due to the cold thrust transit 20; this situation has generated very intense winds over the national territory, with greater notoriety in the Central Valley, the North Pacific and the mountain ranges. The most significant gusts recorded since the early hours of this day are: in Guanacaste, 110 km/h in La Cruz, Liberia, 81 km/h, Santa Cruz, 68 km/h, Bagaces, 82 km/h; in the Central Valley: Alajuela 70 km/h, Pavas 56 km/h, San José and Heredia 53 km / h, Ciudad Colón 66 km/h, Irazú Volcano 77 km/h, among others. Weak and isolated rains have been reported in the Caribbean and the North Zone with amounts of less than 10 mm in the last 12 hours.
Forecast: For this Thursday there will be very intense winds in the national territory; maximum gusts are estimated between 70-110 km/h in the north of Guanacaste, as well as in the mountain ranges of Guanacaste, Tilarán, Central Volcanic Cordillera, Talamanca sector; while, in the lower parts of the Central Valley, the Gulf of Nicoya and the Nicoya Peninsula, gusts are estimated between 50-80 km/h.
Scattered rains are possible in the North Zone, the Caribbean and the north of Guanacaste with accumulated between 5-15 mm in 24 hours. In addition, there is the possibility of drizzle in the mountains of the Central Valley, less than 5 mm in 24 hours.
Due to the effect of the wind, cool temperatures are forecast in the north and east of the Central Valley (San José, Cartago, Heredia mountains) with maximums between 19-24 ° C, in the rest of the country no significant changes in temperature are expected.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Extreme precautions for intense winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
- Also, take precautions for the boats by sharp sea and strong waves in the North Pacific and the Gulf of Nicoya, as well as the aerial navigation by turbulence on the mountainous sectors.
- Extreme caution -at the aeronautical level- due to strong turbulence over the mountainous sectors in Guanacaste and the Central Valley
- Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
