Strong rainy activity persists in some parts of the country
May 08, 2019
Diagnosis: The instability caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone maintains heavy rains in the regions of the Central and South Pacific, generating also electrical storms and intense wind gusts associated with these. The accumulated in the last 3 hours have reached 10-30 mm in the mountainous parts of the Central Valley and between 20-60 mm in the regions of the Central and South Pacific. With respect to the Caribbean and the North Zone, the rains have maintained a tendency to diminish their accumulated steadily, accumulating between 10-20 mm in the last 3 hours and between 40-110 mm from midnight. In the GAM the rains have been intermittent with accumulated between 5-15 mm during this day.
Forecast: During this afternoon and in the early hours of the night will continue the rains of variable intensity, as well as the heavy rainfall in the regions of the Central and South Pacific (Puntarenas-Miramar-Barranca- Jacó- Turrubares- Parrita- Quepos- Dominical- Buenos Aires- Palmar- Drake- Golfito- Neily-Osa Peninsula City) with amounts between 20-40 mm in 3-hour periods.
In the Central Valley it is expected that intermittent rains prevail with accumulated between 5-10 mm in intervals of 1 to 3 hours. For its part, in the Caribbean and the North Zone, it is forecast to be cloudy with rains and possible isolated rainfall in the mountainous areas, with accumulated maximum of 10-20 mm in 3 hour periods.
It is estimated that the rainfall tends to decrease in most parts of the country gradually as the night progresses.
Due to the foregoing, the NMI recommends:
- Caution in areas with vulnerability to floods due to sewer saturation, especially in regions of the Caribbean and North Zone in the rains of the last hours.
- Take refuge in a safe place in case you hear an electric storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible fall of branches of trees, electric laying among others.
