Weather Warning

Windy conditions in the center and north of our country

February 5, 2022
09:50 a.m

Diagnosis: High atmospheric pressure values in Central America, product of a high pressure system that remains in the Gulf of Mexico, is favoring the accelerated trade wind in the country. Gusts between 40 - 60 km/h have been recorded in the Central Valley, while for the North Pacific regions the maximum gusts range between 60 - 80 km/h, with local maximums of up to 97 km/h (La Cruz ). Contributions of humidity from the Caribbean Sea incursion with occasional cloudiness, which have left some rains and short-term rains in the Caribbean regions and in the North Zone. The accumulated amounts are less than 10 mm.

Forecast: It is estimated that very strong winds continue in the north and center of the national territory. Specifically for the Central Valley, maximum gusts are expected with speeds between 40 - 70 km/h, while, in the North Pacific and mountainous sectors of the North Zone, speeds will oscillate between 60 -100 km/h. Regarding rainfall, these will be weak and of short duration for the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions.

Warning: Special attention due to gusts of strong wind in the mountainous sectors in the North Pacific, Central Valley and the mountain ranges.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention of gusts of wind and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and North Central Pacific.

• Avoid burning of all kinds, since they can get out of control. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: National Meteorological Institute CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
