Meteorological Report N°12

Indirect impact from tropical storm Pilar continues this Wednesday

November 1, 2023
10:30 am

Tropical Storm Pilar is positioned over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of El Salvador, with its center approximately 12.5°N and 90.5°W. According to the United States National Hurricane Center, Pilar has sustained winds of 92 km/h and is moving west at about 11 km/h, that is, it is moving away from Central America. Current analyzes show that Pilar maintains its impact on Costa Rica, mainly favoring a flow of humidity towards the country and interacting with the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Figure 1. Predicted track of Tropical Storm Pilar

Forecast: For this afternoon and early evening, variable rainy activity is expected for the national territory. In the Pacific regions, scattered showers with storms are expected in the Guanacaste area and mountainous sectors of the Central and South Pacific. In the Central Valley, isolated rains are anticipated with heavy downpours located mainly in the east and south of the region, as well as in the surroundings of the central mountain range. For the Caribbean, scattered downpours are expected in the mountainous sectors, while the Northern Zone is expected to see widespread rain, including heavy downpours located around the mountain ranges and the border area with Nicaragua. Maximum accumulated values are forecast for the Pacific between 50-100 mm, for the Central Valley between 30-60 mm and for the Northern Zone and mountains of the Caribbean between 40-80 mm. In addition, there is a possibility of occasional gusts of wind in the North Pacific with an estimated range between 20 km/h and 40 km/h and maximums of up to 70 km/h. While, in the mountainous parts of the country they would reach 60 km/h.
If the trend shown in the projections continues, the country would be no longer influenced by tropical storm Pilar by early Thursday morning.

Warning: Special attention in the regions of the North Pacific, Central Pacific and the mountainous areas of the Central Valley and North Zone; because they are the areas where the heaviest rains are expected and where there are soils saturated by the rains in recent days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.

Next report will be issued today at 4:30 p.m.
