Weather Warning

Heavy rains will continue in the early hours of the night in the Pacific

August 3, 2021
4.50 p.m.

Discussion: The passage of tropical wave # 21, as well as the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, warm morning temperatures and entry of sea breezes; have generated this afternoon strong rainy and electrical activity in the North Zone, Central Valley and Pacific, with accumulated maximums between 30-50 mm in the last 3 hours and close to 60 mm in La Fortuna de San Carlos.

Forecast: At the end of the evening period and during the first part of the night, rains of variable intensity and downpours with electrical storms will continue in the Pacific regions; being the strongest precipitation events in the central and southern part of the Nicoya Peninsula. Accumulated estimated between 30-60 mm, with possible higher amounts locally. In the Central Valley, isolated drizzles are possible in mountainous and surrounding areas, amounts less than 10 mm.

Scattered rains are expected in the Northern Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, accumulated between 10-40 mm.

Warning: Due to recent rains, high levels of soil saturation are maintained in the North Zone and the Cordillera de Talamanca (towards both slopes), they can generate a rapid increase in the flow of rivers and in unstable areas with a high propensity to landslides.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution for sewer saturation and possible flash floods in the Pacific, Central Valley and North Zone.
  • Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind occurring or perceived near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
