Weather Warning

Rainy conditions for this afternoon and monitoring of tropical wave #34

September 5, 2023
10:30 am

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ZCIT) remains over the country, favoring an unstable environment in the atmosphere. Tropical wave #34 is currently located over Panama (79 °W) and continues its path towards our country.

Forecast: It is expected that during the afternoon and early evening the ZCIT activity will strengthen, generating precipitation of variable intensity over the national territory. More stable conditions are expected for the Caribbean, although rains in the mountains are not ruled out.

For the Pacific, downpours with electrical storm are expected for the afternoon, with amounts between 20-40 mm and punctual maximums of 70 mm in periods of 6 hours. The precipitations can start in the mountainous parts and move towards the lower parts.

For the Central Valley and mountainous sectors of the North Zone, rains of variable intensity are estimated, with greater emphasis on the west of the Central Valley and mountains of the North Zone. Accumulated between 15-50 mm with maximum in high places of 75-80 mm in periods of 6 hours.

Tropical wave #34 will enter the country at dawn on Wednesday, September 6, therefore, the rains that will manifest this Wednesday will be associated with the transit of this wave.

In the district of Aguas Zarcas, variable intensity rains are expected, mainly during the afternoon and early evening, amounts between 15-50 mm.

Warning: Caution is recommended in sectors with high vulnerability to landslides and increased flow in streams and rivers, due to rainfall of variable intensity. Special attention to the Pacific and mountainous sectors of the North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

Prevention against electrical storm and seek refuge in a safe place in case of appearing or perceiving strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100 km/h in some isolated cases.
