Weather Warning (Update)
Afternoon showers with thunderstorms for the Pacific this Wednesday
June 11, 2025

Diagnosis: Unstable conditions persist in different layers of the atmosphere over the region. This, combined with local factors, favors a high probability of heavy downpours with thunderstorms for several areas of the country.
This afternoon, moderate to heavy rainfall events have developed in several regions of the country. The highest accumulated rainfall is:
• Central Valley: Ciudad Colón 49 mm, Santa Ana 42 mm, Belén Heredia 36 mm, La Garita Alajuela 29 mm.
• North Pacific: Hojancha 43 mm, Aranjuez Pitahaya Puntarenas 25 mm, Guayabal Mastate Orotina 21 mm.
• North Zone: La Palmera 27 mm and Brasilia Upala 17 mm.
• Central and South Pacific: San Vito 32 mm, Buenos Aires 24 mm, and Río Nuevo de PZ 21 mm.
• Caribbean: Turrialba Volcano 15 mm, Siquirres and Guápiles 15 mm.
Forecast: Rainfall is expected to continue in Guanacaste tonight and extend to the northern zone and northern Caribbean, with estimated amounts of 25 to 55 mm over a 6-hour period. Cloudy skies are expected in the rest of the country with fog and/or intermittent light rain.
⚠Note: Analysis and numerical models continue to show an intensification of rainfall for at least the next 2-3 days (but it could extend), especially on the Pacific side. This is due to the strengthening of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the face of the possible formation of a low-pressure system in the Pacific near the country, as well as the passage of OT #5. The IMN will continue to monitor these systems and will issue a forecast update as needed. Warning: Pay special attention to the Nicoya Peninsula, mountainous areas of the Caribbean and Northern Zones, as well as the South Pacific, as these areas have soil saturation between 85-95%, which increases the risk of incidents.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
