Weather Warning Update

Intertropical Convergence Zone over Costa Rica and Onda Tropical # 26 for this Friday

August 11, 2022
4.20 pm

Diagnosis: This Thursday the Intertropical Convergence Zone is located over the country, providing abundant humidity from early hours of the day, causing heavy downpours with storms in various sectors of the country.

Those accumulated so far reach 99.6 mm in Liberia, 42 mm in Carrillo, 45 mm in Sarapiquí, 56 mm in Poás volcano, 52 mm in Santa Bárbara de Heredia, 38 mm in Guápiles, among other smaller amounts.

In addition, tropical wave #26 is located in the central/western sector of Panama and is expected to be influencing our country this Friday.

Forecast: The end of this afternoon and Thursday night, heavy rains with storms will remain mainly on the Pacific slope and North Zone, with estimated amounts between 30mm and 40mm with maximums of 80mm in periods of 3 hours. The rest of the country with banks of fog and rains of variable intensity with amounts between 20 to 50 mm in periods of 3 hours.

In addition, this Friday we will have the transit of tropical wave #26 through the country. We hope that this atmospheric system of frequent traffic in our rainy season is reinforcing the rains generated by local effects and by the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which will also remain very active. In the morning, rains are expected on both sides of our country, the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts. Especially in the Central Pacific and North Pacific. In addition to a cloudy environment in the rest of the country. For the afternoon, downpours with storms are expected to a greater extent for the North Zone, mountain ranges and surrounding areas of the Caribbean, as well as in the Central and South Pacific, heavy rainfall is also possible in the Central Valley. During the night the recurrence of rains and downpours is expected in the south of the national territory. Warning: Special attention due to high levels of soil saturation in the eastern regions of the Central Valley, Central Pacific, South Pacific, Talamanca sector, North Zone and Caribbean (especially sectors bordering the mountains)

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: National Meteorological Institute CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
