Weather Warning

Rains in some parts of the country this afternoon

18 de marzo de 2021
10:30 am

Diagnosis: The high temperatures registered this morning over a large part of the national territory, together with the entry of humidity from maritime areas, generates favorable conditions for the development of clouds and rainfall for this afternoon and part of the night in some areas of the country.

Forecast: During this afternoon and early evening, isolated rains (10-30 mm) are forecast for the Central and South Pacific regions, with the possibility of localized downpours and thunderstorms (40-60 mm) in the mountainous parts and near the border with Panama.

For the Central Valley probability of scattered rains of intensity between weak and moderate, especially in the high parts and surroundings (1-15 mm). More intense downpours may occasionally occur, especially to the west and north of the region (20-30 mm).

For the Caribbean regions and the Northern Zone, scattered rains (5-15 mm) are also expected in the mountainous parts and with the possibility of intense downpours (20-50 mm) in a localized manner.

For the North Pacific, probability of weak to moderate rains (1-10 mm) in the Guanacaste mountain range and south of the Nicoya peninsula.

NOTE: The amounts of precipitation in parentheses refer to maximum accumulated estimates in periods of 6 hours.

Warning: Special attention in the Central and South Pacific and the surroundings of the mountain ranges of the country due to the probability of downpours and storms.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes)
  •     Precaution for rough seas in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and the Caribbean and in the face of air navigation as a consequence of the presence of turbulence up to at least 8000 feet in height.
  •     Avoid burning of any kind, as dry and windy conditions can easily get out of control.
