Weather Warning

Windy conditions this saturday over Central Valley and North Pacific

March 27, 2021
10.30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The presence of a large high pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean causes the trade winds both in the Caribbean Sea and in southern Central America to be accelerated of strong intensity. In Costa Rica, strong gusts of wind (between 40km / h and 60km / h) have been recorded in the Central Valley and very strong gusts (between 60km / h and 90km / h) near the Cordillera de Guanacaste and the north of the province.

Forecast: The windy pattern will be present this weekend, being perceived with greater intensity near the mountain ranges, the Central Valley and the North Pacific. Wind gusts in the Central Valley are expected to range between 40km / h and 60km / h, with peaks of up to 70 km / h at night in the mountains; while in the North Pacific they range between 60km / h and 90km / h, with maximums close to 100 km / h in the canton of La Cruz in Guanacaste.

Regarding rainfall, no significant rains are expected for the next few days.

Warning: Special attention to the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges of the country due to strong gusts of wind and to the Caribbean due to rainfall.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes)

• Precaution for rough seas in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and the Caribbean and in the face of air navigation as a consequence of the presence of turbulence up to at least 8000 feet in height.

• Avoid burning of any kind, as dry and windy conditions can easily get out of control.
