Weather Warning
Low pressure in the southwest of the Caribbean Sea
September 30, 2024
11.20 a.m.
Diagnosis: Unstable conditions persist in the atmosphere over the country, due to local factors, the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the formation of a disorganized low pressure system southwest of the Caribbean Sea. This low pressure system is causing rain and showers with storms in the North Pacific, South Pacific, North Zone and Caribbean, as well as abundant cloudiness in the rest of the country this morning. There have also been scattered rains in the Central Valley.
Specifically, in the last 6 hours amounts of up to 30 mm have been recorded in the North Pacific and between 15 to 40 mm in the South Pacific, lesser amounts in the rest of the regions.
Forecast: This condition will continue to favor abundant cloudiness with the presence of intermittent rains of varying intensity in the country this afternoon and evening. The effects of the low pressure could extend into Tuesday.
The highest accumulations today are expected to occur in the center and north of the national territory, precipitation amounts between 50 to 80 mm are anticipated in the mountains and surrounding areas of the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, as well as in the plains/mountains of the North Pacific and South Pacific, possible higher amounts could occur in a localized manner. In addition, rains between 30 to 60 mm are expected in the mountains and surrounding areas of the Central Pacific and in the Central Valley.
Particularly during the night, the rainy activity will be extending to the Pacific and the Caribbean, with a lower intensity in the rest of the country.
Regarding the evolution of the aforementioned low pressure system: the National Hurricane Center of the United States has reduced its cyclogenizing potential to 0% in two days and to 40% in seven days. Furthermore, it is not expected that this disturbance will affect the country with increased precipitation in the second half of the week when it is located in the north of the Central American isthmus.
The IMN continues to monitor this low pressure and will promptly report any changes in the projections.
