Weather Report No. 12

Tropical Storm Bonnie passing through the north of the country

July 2, 2022
1.00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall with its center passing the Costa Rica-Nicaragua border on Friday night. Currently its center is positioned about 125 km to the ENE of Liberia, it is moving at a speed of 26 km/h towards the West (W) and sustained winds of 75 km/h. According to the most recent data, this system is on track and is expected to leave land on Saturday morning.

In the last 3 hours there have been precipitations of variable intensity with the most significant amounts in the northern regions of the country between 20-60 mm; although there may be higher amounts in places near the San Juan River in the North Caribbean. Due to the above, the soils in the province of Limón, the canton of Sarapiquí in Heredia, and the cantons of San Carlos, Los Chiles, Guatuso and Upala are saturated.

Forecast: Bonnie's influence will be felt in the North Caribbean and Northern Zone regions; in addition to the cantons of both La Cruz and Liberia and places near the Cordillera de Guanacaste in the North Pacific, being the places with the greatest influence during the course of tonight.

In the short term (next 3 hours): Cloud bands associated with Bonnie continue to enter the border with Nicaragua, an intensification of the rains is expected along places near the San Juan River, such as the North Zone (Los Chiles, Upala, Guatuso) and the Guanacaste area, mainly near the mountain ranges. In the rest of the country, the rains will be of variable intensity with downpours near the mountains of the Central Valley, especially in the north.

Gusts of wind between 65 km/h and 100 km/h in the vicinity of the Cordillera de Guanacaste, mainly in the cantons of Los Chiles, Upala, Guatuso, La Cruz; Liberia, Tilarán, Bagaces and Cañas during Friday night and Saturday morning.

Rainfall will continue during the early hours of Saturday in the North Zone, north of Guanacaste and to a lesser extent in the North Caribbean, with estimated amounts (in 24 hours) between 100-250 mm. In the Central Pacific and the South Pacific between 100-150 mm. Rains of variable intensity in the Central Valley, especially in mountainous areas, accumulated between 40-70 mm.

By Sunday, the influence will gradually diminish as the tropical storm moves into the Pacific Ocean; therefore, on this day rainfall typical of the rainy season is anticipated, with estimated amounts between 90mm and 120mm in 24 hours in a timely manner.

Warning: Special attention to regions of both the North Zone and the North Caribbean because due to the proximity of these regions the possible trajectory, these areas are more vulnerable to flooding at this time. Intense gusts near the Cordilleras de Guanacaste.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible sudden flooding in the North, Central and North Pacific.

 • Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.

• Avoid exposing yourself to open places in places where the intensity of the wind is intense.

• Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: National Meteorological Institute CR and the WEB page: www.imn.ac.cr.

Next report will be issued tomorrow Saturday at 4 a.m.
