Weather Report #11

Tropical storm Marco continues to advance towards the Gulf of Mexico, the indirect influence tends to be less on this day

August 22, 2020
10.00 a.m.

Discussion: According to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), tropical storm Marco, is located 180 km east (E) of Cozumel Mexico with a speed of 19 km / h. This disturbance maintains the Intertropical Convergence Zone to the north of our country causing a flow of moisture from the Pacific Ocean and which continues mainly to the North Pacific. The rains have decreased considerably in the country, there is only weak rain in the South Pacific with accumulations of less than 5 mm.

Forecast: In the remainder of the morning, partial cloudiness will remain in much of the country, it is estimated a gradual increase in cloud cover and rains near noon towards the Pacific regions, accumulated 10-30 mm.

In the afternoon, rainy and electrical activity is estimated in regions of the Pacific, North Zone, Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, amounts between 30-70 mm and possible higher accumulated in a specific way.

At night, isolated showers and electrical storms will continue in Pacific coastal areas, as well as in the North Zone, accumulating between 30-60 mm; for its part, in the Central Valley, occasional rains are expected with amounts between 10-30 mm.

According to the latest analyzes, as the tropical Marco continues its movement towards the Gulf of Mexico, the country will gradually reduce the indirect influence of said disturbance.

Warning: Special attention in the North Pacific, the North Zone and the South Pacific due to high level of soil saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility, special attention to Route 27 tonight due to heavy downpours.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
