Weather Report N°12

Rainy weekend in Costa Rica

June 11, 2022
09.30 a.m.

Diagnosis This weekend the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will remain over Costa Rica this weekend. Added to this, due to the warm temperatures this morning, the evaporation process has started, increasing the atmospheric instability in the country today.

In addition, tropical wave #7 is located over Panama this Saturday and will be arriving in the country during the early hours of Sunday, favoring the occurrence of rains during that day.

Forecast: In general, for this afternoon and part of the night downpours with electrical storms distributed throughout the national territory are expected.

In the Central Pacific and South Pacific regions, amounts between 30mm and 60mm are expected, with maximums between 70mm and 100mm, mainly around the Osa Peninsula. The rains in these places are expected to start towards the end of the afternoon and extend until hours of the night.

On the other hand, in the North Pacific, estimated amounts between 25mm and 50mm are expected with maximums of up to 75mm.

Both in the North Zone and the Caribbean, rainfall will be isolated with amounts between 20mm and 40mm with punctual maximums. While, in the Central Valley, concentrated downpours are expected in both the northern and eastern sectors of the region, with estimated amounts between 25mm and 50mm.

Warning: Special attention to places vulnerable to flooding in: the South Pacific, south of the Nicoya Peninsula and the North Zone (including Sarapiquí); and by landslides in: the Los Santos Zone, Route 32 and mountain passes in the North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods in the Pacific, Central Valley and North Zone.
  • Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
