Air Quality Forecast
The Costa Rican Air Quality Index (ICCA) is a tool to evaluate and communicate, in a simple and understandable way, the level of air pollution in different areas of the country. This index is based on the concentration of various pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and classifies air quality in categories ranging from ‘Good' to ‘Dangerous'.
Knowing the ICCA is important because it allows the population to make informed decisions about their outdoor activities, especially vulnerable people such as children, the elderly or people with respiratory diseases. The index forecast is very useful, as it allows to anticipate possible episodes of poor air quality and to take preventive measures at both personal and institutional level to protect public health and reduce exposure to pollutants. Air Quality Model (Silam)
Integrated Atmospheric Transport Modelling System) is a numerical model developed in Finland to predict air quality. This model uses mathematical equations to simulate the transport and transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere. SILAM takes into account factors such as emissions, meteorology, atmospheric chemistry and dry and wet deposition to calculate the concentrations of various pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone (O3), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO).
