Weather Warning

Rainy afternoon in the country this Monday

October 9, 2023
10.30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains over Costa Rica, reinforcing local factors such as warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes, which have begun to generate in the national territory, in addition to occasional rains in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula in the early hours of the day.

Forecast: For this afternoon, the most intense rainfall will be concentrated in the mountainous sectors of the Central Valley, Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean, with estimated amounts of 25 mm and 50 mm with maximums of 80 mm. These rains will extend to the GAM and plains of both San Carlos and Limón during the afternoon.

For its part, on the Pacific Slope the downpours will be concentrated in the North Pacific and the South Pacific, with estimated amounts between 30 mm and 60 mm with maximums of up to 90 mm. While, in the Central Pacific the rains will be concentrated in the mountains, with estimated values between 15 mm and 30 mm. Finally, on the Caribbean coast the rains would be very punctual and close to the mountains.

The rain is expected to continue into the early hours of the night. Fog banks are possible in the Central Valley and mountainous areas.

Tropical wave #45 is approaching the country, and will cross the national territory tomorrow, Tuesday.

Warning: High soil saturation in the mountains of the Northern Zone, the Nicoya Peninsula and the Central Valley, places where special attention is recommended.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • • Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • • Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases.
