Weather Warning | Update

Rainfall activity of varying intensity this afternoon in the Pacific and Northern Zone

June 26, 2025
5:00 p.m.

Diagnostic: The passage of Tropical Wave #9, in combination with the Intertropical Convergence Zone, maintains atmospheric instability over the country. This has generated rain showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. The most important precipitation accumulations since 7:00 a.m. are:

• North Pacific between 30 and 50 mm, with a maximum of 80 mm in Hojancha.
• Northern Zone between 20 and 50 mm, with peak values around Upala.
• In the rest of the regions, accumulations between 10 mm and 30 mm have been recorded, with a maximum of 35 mm in Cartago, 36 mm in Santa Bárbara, and 45 mm in Laurel.

Forecast: For the remainder of the afternoon and evening, showers with thunderstorms and rain are expected to continue in the North Pacific, the Northern Zone, and the western Northern Caribbean. Accumulations between 20 mm and 40 mm are estimated, with maximums between 60 mm and 80 mm over 6 to 12-hour periods. In the rest of the country, accumulations between 10 mm and 25 mm are expected, with maximums between 30 mm and 50 mm, especially in mountainous areas. These conditions will gradually decrease between the end of the afternoon and the early night.

Warning: Soils remain highly saturated (95-100%) in the Northern Zone and in mountainous sectors of the Northern Caribbean (places such as Sarapiquí, San Carlos, Los Chiles, Upala), as well as in the mountains of the Central-Southern Pacific (Valle del General, Buenos Aires, Coto Brus, Potrero Grande), which increases the risk of landslides and flooding in these areas. Elevated saturation (65-85%) is also reported in the Nicoya Peninsula, areas near the Golfo Dulce, and the north-central Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to possible drainage system overflow in areas prone to flooding from water accumulation.
  • Prevention during thunderstorms: if one occurs or strong wind gusts are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe location, as falling tree branches, power lines, or other objects may occur. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
