Weather Warning -Update-
Rainy Afternoon in Costa Rica
June 27th, 2025
05.40 p.m.
Forecast: After the passage of Tropical Wave 9 yesterday, Thursday, the atmosphere remains unstable over the country. Along with warm morning temperatures and high humidity from recent rains, this afternoon's rainfall has caused heavy rains and thunderstorms in different regions of the country. The northern region stands out with maximums of up to 60 mm at the Balsa station in San Ramón, the northern Pacific with rainfall of up to 60 mm in La Cruz, and the Central Valley with maximum rainfall ranges between 30 mm and 61 mm.
Forecast: During the remainder of the afternoon, rainfall will gradually decrease in the Central Valley, the central and southern Pacific, as well as in the northern Caribbean, with estimated amounts between 10 and 30 mm over a period of 1 to 3 hours. Meanwhile, in the North Pacific, the Northern Zone (especially the western sector) and the east of Cartago province (Turrialba canton), showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue into the early evening, accumulating between 25-50 mm (1-2 in) and possibly higher amounts at times over six-hour periods.
For this Saturday, the passage of tropical wave 10 will favor an unstable environment, as well as high humidity, which are factors that will cause rainfall. The most significant rainfall will occur during the afternoon and early evening.
⚠️Warning: Soils remain highly saturated (95-100%) in the Northern Zone and in mountainous areas of the Northern Caribbean (places such as Sarapiquí, San Carlos, Los Chiles, Upala), as well as in the mountains of the Central-South Pacific (Valle del General, Buenos Aires, Coto Brus, Potrero Grande), increasing the risk of landslides and flooding in these areas. High saturation (65-85%) is also reported on the Nicoya Peninsula, areas near the Golfo Dulce, and the northeastern-central North Pacific.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
- Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
