Weather Warning

Tropical Wave #10 over Costa Rica

June 28th, 2025
10:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical wave #10 is over the country this Saturday, causing instability in maritime areas of the Caribbean and northern parts of the Northern Zone. There has been increasing cloudiness and variable but scattered rains, this in sectors of the Caribbean, parts of the north and west of the North Zone (Upala). Accumulated rainfall is below 15 mm.

Forecast: In the course of the morning, variable but short period showers will continue in sectors of the Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean. Accumulated rainfall in 6-hour periods will be below 40 mm.
For this afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Central Pacific, South Pacific, with estimated amounts between 25 mm and 50 mm with maximum amounts of up to 70 mm. The Central Valley and North Pacific will have variable rainfall around noon in eastern and northern sectors, occasionally reaching lower elevations. Meanwhile, in the western sectors of the Valley and over the Nicoya Peninsula, isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected. The amounts will be between 15 - 35 mm with maximums of 60 mm.

In the Caribbean and east of the Northern Zone, scattered precipitation will begin again at night reaching the mountains. Estimated amounts between 15 mm and 40 mm. In the Pacific, rains will continue at night, decreasing in intensity, but only in localized sectors of the coasts.

Warning: The previous rains maintain soils with high moisture content in the Northern Zone, the Caribbean mountains, the Talamanca mountain range and central parts of the North Pacific. Other sectors with considerable moisture content are the lower parts of the Northern Caribbean and the northern border area of the country.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

- Caution before possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
- Prevention before thunderstorms: in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as they could generate falling tree branches, power lines or other objects. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
