Weather Report #3

Rainy activity will continue at night in the Pacific

August 26, 2020
06.00 p.m.

Discussion: The sum of several factors are generating rainy conditions on this day, among them an active Intertropical Convergence Zone positioned over Costa Rica, instability in medium and high levels of the atmosphere and the continuous arrival of humidity from the Pacific Ocean. During this afternoon, rainfall has occurred in much of the national territory, the strongest rains have been located in the mountains of the Caribbean, North and Central Pacific with maximums between 25-50 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: This night rains of variable intensity and downpours with isolated electrical storms are expected throughout the Pacific slope, with a greater accentuation in the North and Central Pacific, estimated accumulated between 50-100 mm, with possible higher amounts locally. For the Central Valley, North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, intermittent rain is expected in the first part of the night period, amounts between 10-30 mm. High probability of fog banks in the Central Valley.

Towards the early hours of Thursday, intermittent rains of variable intensity are expected throughout the Pacific, mainly in the North Pacific accumulated between 40-80 mm. For the Central Valley, weak to moderate rains and fog banks are expected, amounts between 10-20 mm. On the other hand, in mountainous sectors of the North Zone and the Caribbean, scattered rains with accumulated less than 10 mm are possible.

Warning: Special attention to the North and Central Pacific, as well as in the North Zone, since they maintain high levels of soil saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Prevention on the main national highways due to reduced visibility.
  • Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
