Weather Warning
Intertropical Convergence Zone active and close to the country -update-
August 14, 2022
6:40 p.m.
Diagnosis: During this afternoon, the Intertropical Convergence Zone positioned itself over the country, which, added to local factors, generated heavy downpours in the Pacific, east and north of the Central Valley, and more isolatedly in the North Caribbean. The maximum accumulated amounts are around 40-90 mm, with the border zone with Panama, mountainous sectors of the South Pacific and the surroundings of Carrillo Guanacaste being the most affected. Incidents due to flooding and landslides are reported in sectors of Corredores, Coto Brus, Jiménez, Santa Ana and Buenos Aires, among others.
Forecast: A large convective nucleus covers the central and southern part of the country, with the most intense zone located in the maritime part in front of the sectors of Dominical, Uvita and surroundings. Said nucleus will be generating variable rainfall in the Central and South Pacific throughout this night period, including heavy downpours in the coastal area, mainly in the next 1-2 hours. In a more localized way, another nucleus is observed on the Tenorio volcano and it will be generating strong downpours in the surroundings in the next 1-3 hours with the possibility of spreading to the Upala Zone, Los Chiles and nearby areas. Amounts between 30-60 mm are estimated. Precipitation is expected to decrease gradually in the second part of the night period.
Warning: Special attention in the Central and South Pacific, in addition to the surroundings of the mountain ranges in the north of the country because they show they are the regions where the heaviest rains are expected. Special attention also for possible intense electrical activity.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible sudden flooding.
• Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in case of occurrence or
perceive strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to possible falling branches
of trees, power lines among others.
