Aviso Meteorológico

Unstable conditions prevail in the country this Wednesday and tropical wave #6 for this Thursday

June 5, 2024
10.45 a.m.

Diagnosis: This Wednesday, favorable conditions for recurrent rains prevail in southern Central America due to: local factors, the position and activation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the prevailing instability due to the frequent passage of tropical waves. Specifically, tropical wave #6 is located at 80° West (over Panama) and continues to advance westward.

Forecast: This Wednesday we expect a new rainy day in the country. During the morning, the rains will spread to the Pacific, especially in both peninsulas (Osa and Nicoya) and the Central Pacific mountain range. In the afternoon, we will have the development of cloudiness in most of the national territory, with the presence of rains and heavy downpours with thunderstorms along the Pacific, Central Valley, Caribbean and Northern Zone. It should be noted that very heavy downpours are possible in sectors of the Braulio National Park, Sarapiquí, Carrillo, Pococí, Guácimo and Turrialba and surrounding areas, amounts between 50 to 100 mm again, with possible higher values in a localized manner. During the night period we expect that rains of varying intensity will continue mainly on the Pacific coast. Amounts between 20 to 80 mm, higher values are possible in a localized manner.

Tropical wave #6 and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone will be reinforcing rainfall in the country during this Thursday. Warning: High levels of soil saturation persist in the plains, mountainous areas and their surroundings in the Caribbean and Northern Zone (Sarapiquí, Pococí, mountains adjacent to Guatuso and Upala, among others), the South Pacific in general and mountains of the Central Pacific; therefore, they are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible floods. Likewise, in the east and north of the Central Valley, the Nicoya Peninsula and the Tempisque sector.

We recommend that the population stay informed through the next communications and analysis.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
