Weather Warning

Heavy downpours during the afternoon in the Pacific and northern regions

July 07th, 2025
10.40 a.m.

Discussion: Tropical Wave 13 is located in western Costa Rica, close to entering the Pacific Ocean. Although it is a weak wave, its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone increases instability and, combined with local factors such as morning warming and the arrival of sea breezes, will lead to heavy rains during the afternoon and early evening.

Forecast: Heavy rain and downpours with thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and early evening in the Pacific and northern regions, beginning in the mountains and gradually spreading to the lower reaches of these areas. Accumulations of between 30 and 60 mm are expected, with higher amounts possible locally over periods of 6 to 12 hours. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is expected in the Central Valley and Caribbean mountains, with amounts of 10 to 40 mm over periods of 6 to 12 hours.

Warning: Soil saturation remains high, between 90% and 95%, in the Upala and Sarapiquí basins. Saturation levels range between 80% and 85% in the northern Caribbean, South Pacific, and Nicoya Peninsula. This increases the vulnerability to incidents in prone areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be cautious about possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
  • Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
