Weather Warning

Windy conditions in the center and north of the country this Saturday

March 13, 2021
10:10 am

Diagnosis: During this morning there have been strong gusts in the center and north of the country with maximum values ??between 70-90 km / h in Guanacaste (the strongest in the north) and between 40-60 km / h in the Central Valley (the stronger to the west), this as a consequence of a strong atmospheric pressure gradient over the Caribbean Sea. In addition, some weak drizzles occurred east of the Central Valley and in the vicinity of the Guanacaste mountain range.

Forecast: For this afternoon, the windy conditions are expected to continue in the center and north of the country with maximum gusts estimated between 45-65 km / h for the Central Valley and the lower parts of Guanacaste and between 60-80 km / h for the north of Guanacaste and the mountain ranges. The windy pattern is expected to gradually subside overnight.

Regarding rainfall, isolated weak rains of short duration are possible in the vicinity of the mountains in the central and northern part of the national territory. In addition, scattered showers are anticipated in the South Pacific, most likely near the border with Panama and around the Osa Peninsula.

Warning: Special attention in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges of the country due to the strong gusts of wind.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
  •     Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes)
  •     Precaution for rough seas in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and the Caribbean and in the face of air navigation as a consequence of the presence of turbulence up to at least 8000 feet in height.
  •     Avoid burning of any kind, as dry and windy conditions can easily get out of control.
