Weather Warning

Rainfall of variable intensity

June 21, 2025
10.50 a.m.

Discussion: A gradual return of precipitation will occur in different regions of the country starting today, due to the movement and activation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone toward our latitudes.

During the morning, cloud cover continued to move from the Caribbean Sea into the country, favoring rainfall of varying intensity in the province of Limón and the North Zone. Accumulations of between 30 mm and 50 mm have been recorded in the last 12 hours in these regions. The cloud cover has extended to a lesser extent to the Central Valley, causing light precipitation, particularly in the eastern and northern sectors, with amounts ranging from 1 to 5 mm in 12 hours. In addition, cloud developments in the Pacific Ocean are approaching the south of our country, increasing cloud cover in the South Pacific and promoting rain in the Osa Peninsula and surrounding areas.

Forecast: Rainy activity will continue throughout the morning and afternoon in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, with the possibility of scattered thunderstorms not ruled out. Also, in the Pacific regions, showers with thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon and early evening, with greater intensity in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Nicoya Peninsula, Tempisque Valley, and surrounding areas. For the Central Valley, rainfall of varying intensity and possible thunderstorms are expected. Accumulations of 25-60 mm are estimated over a 6-hour period, with higher amounts possible locally.

Tropical Wave 7 is located in eastern Panama and is gradually moving westward. This system is expected to arrive in Costa Rica on Sunday, which could increase rainfall in the country.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
  • Thunderstorm Prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are detected near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
