Weather Advisory

Variable intensity rainfall expected this afternoon, in the Pacific and North Zone

June 26th, 2025
9:50 a.m.

Diagnostic: Tropical Wave 9, located in the Pacific near the country, is still unstable in its surroundings. Along with the Intertropical Convergence Zone over southern Central America, it will generate rain and thunderstorms this afternoon across the country.

Forecast: During the afternoon, showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected throughout the Pacific mountain range and central parts of the country, in the Central Valley and the Northern Zone. Following the showers and thunderstorms, rain will spread and linger in other surrounding regions and low-lying parts of the Pacific (also with more scattered showers and thunderstorms). Accumulated rainfall over 6- to 12-hour periods is expected to range from 25 to 50 mm, with maximums between 70 and 95 mm (the latter mainly towards the north-central part of the country - Northern Zone and Northern Pacific). Showers with possible thunderstorms are also estimated, more scattered, over the mountains of the North and South Caribbean. Estimated amounts range between 15 and 40 mm, with localized maximums of up to 80 mm.

⚠️ Warning: Soils remain highly saturated (95-100%) in the Northern Zone and in mountainous areas of the North Caribbean (places such as Sarapiquí, San Carlos, Los Chiles, Upala), as well as in the mountains of the Central-South Pacific (Valle del General, Buenos Aires, Coto Brus, Potrero Grande), increasing the risk of landslides and flooding in these areas. High saturation (65-85%) is also reported in the Nicoya Peninsula, areas near the Golfo Dulce, and the central-northeastern North Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
• Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
