Weather Warning

Tarde lluviosa en Costa Rica

June 27th, 2025
10:00 am

Diagnosis: After the passage of tropical wave #9 on Thursday, the atmosphere continues to be unstable over the country, which, together with the warm temperatures of this morning and the high percentage of humidity due to the rains of the last few days, create ideal conditions for showers with thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Forecast: For this afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Central Valley and the Pacific slope, with estimated amounts between 25 mm and 50 mm with maximum amounts of up to 80 mm over the mountainous sectors of these regions and the Guanacaste plains. In the Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean mountains, rainfall will begin in the mountains and will extend to the plains, with estimated amounts between 15 mm and 30 mm with maximum amounts of up to 50 mm.

At night, moderate to heavy rains will continue in the North Pacific and part of the Northern Zone. Rainfall amounts between 20 mm and 40 mm are expected with maximums of up to 60 mm punctually in the mountains.

⚠️Advertencia: Soils remain highly saturated (95-100%) in the Northern Zone and in mountainous sectors of the Northern Caribbean (places like Sarapiqui, San Carlos, Los Chiles, Upala), as well as in the mountains of the Central-South Pacific (Valle del General, Buenos Aires, Coto Brus, Potrero Grande), which increases the risk of landslides and floods in these areas. High saturation (65-85%) is also reported in the Nicoya Peninsula, areas near the Golfo Dulce and the central-northeastern North Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

- Caution before possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
- Prevention before thunderstorms: in case of strong wind gusts near thunderstorm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as they could generate falling tree branches, power lines or other objects. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
