Weather Warning

Scattered showers with thunderstorms due to the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone

April 30, 2023
11:00 am

Diagnosis: The proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone to break local instability, added to factors of warm temperatures and sea breezes throughout the Pacific slope, afternoon episodes of precipitation will again be favored.

Forecast: For hours in the afternoon, the occurrence of scattered downpours accompanied by electrical storms is forecast in the upper parts of the Central Pacific, South Pacific regions, as well as the north and west of the Central Valley, next to the Nicoya Peninsula, around the Gulf and western slopes of the Cordillera de Guanacaste. The precipitations, despite being dispersed, are anticipated to be of strong intensity.

The estimated amounts will remain between 15 – 50 mm, with very local maximums of up to 80 mm, in periods of 6 hours.

Warning: Watch out for wind gusts common in local storm systems, as well as small flash floods. Soils with high saturation values occur in the mountains of the South Pacific, where rains have been frequent due to the established rainy season in that region.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Precaution for sewage saturation in places likely to this type of flooding.

• Prevention before electrical storm and seek refuge in a safe place in case of appearing or perceiving strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
