Weather Report No. 7

Tropical Wave #13 will develop into a tropical storm this Friday

July 01, 2022
7.00 a.m.

Discussion: Tropical Wave #13 continues its advance towards Central America, it is located 381 km northeast of Limón and moves at a speed of 30 km/h towards the west. Sustained winds remain at 65 km/h. An increasingly better organization of this disturbance is observed, so the probability of developing into a tropical storm is greater in a short period of time.

On the forecast track, the system will move over the southwestern Caribbean Sea this Friday; tonight it will cross southern Nicaragua/northern Costa Rica, moving to the Pacific Ocean on Saturday.

Forecast: The influence of the system in Costa Rica will increase as this Friday and Saturday passes.
During this Friday: heavy downpours mainly for the regions of the North Zone, Caribbean and North of Guanacaste with estimated amounts (in 24 hours) of around 100-200 mm. In the Central Pacific and the South Pacific, estimated amounts of 100 mm. Rains of variable intensity are estimated in the Central Valley, amounts between 40-70 mm, the highest in mountainous sectors.

Gusts of wind between 65 km/h and 100 km/h in the vicinity of the Cordillera de Guanacaste, mainly in the cantons of Los Chiles, Upala, Guatuso, La Cruz; Liberia, Tilarán, Bagaces and Cañas during Friday night and Saturday morning.

On Saturday the rains will continue in the North Zone, north of Guanacaste and to a lesser extent in the North Caribbean, with estimated amounts (in 24 hours) between 100-250 mm. In the Central Pacific and the South Pacific between 100-150 mm. Rains of variable intensity in the Central Valley, especially in mountainous sectors, accumulated between 40-70 mm.

By Sunday, the effects will diminish as this disturbance enters the Pacific Ocean; therefore, on this day rainfall typical of the rainy season is estimated, with estimated amounts between 90mm and 120mm in 24 hours in a timely manner.

Warning: Special attention to regions of both the North Zone and the North Caribbean because due to the proximity of these regions the possible trajectory, these areas are more vulnerable to flooding at this time. Intense gusts near the Cordilleras de Guanacaste

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods in the North, Central and North Pacific.
  • Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
  • Avoid exposing yourself to open places in places where the intensity of the wind is intense.
