Heavy showers with storm this afternoon and evening -UPDATE-

October 11, 2023
5:35 pm

Diagnosis: Presence of downpours with storms this afternoon in the country. Some of the factors involved in today's instability continue to be the high moisture content in the atmosphere and the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

In the afternoon, this type of precipitation has occurred in the Central Valley and Central Pacific with accumulations between 10 – 40 mm with maximum punctual values of up to 60 mm (Goicoechea and Naranjo), in the South Pacific and North Pacific with accumulations between 25 mm. – 50 mm with specific maximums of up to 70 - 90 mm (Paquera, Buenos Aires-Altamira, Uvita-Sierpe), while, on the other hand, the Northern Zone and the Caribbean present isolated rains with accumulated amounts of less than 40 mm.

Forecast: By late afternoon and early evening, strong rainy activity is expected in most of the Pacific coast, this in points such as Parrita, Quepos, Puerto Jiménez, Paquera, Tamarindo, Nosara, Puerto Cortés, as well as the west of the Northern Caribbean and mountains of the southeast of the Northern Zone (Sarapiquí, P.N. Braulio Carrillo, Ciudad Quesada). The accumulated ones will be between 25 - 45 mm with specific maximums of up to 70 mm. In the Central Valley there will be rains varying from moderate to weak with accumulations of less than 30 mm.

Warning: Special attention in the Nicoya and Osa Peninsula, plains and mountains of the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, as well as towards the south of the Central Valley due to the vulnerability of saturated soils, increasing the risk of incidents. Also, pay attention to the Talamanca mountain range and surrounding border areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases. Likewise, given the possibility of hail and whirlwind events during this day.
