Weather Warning (Update)

Heavy showers this afternoon and early evening in the country

May 6, 2025
6:20 p.m.

Diagnosis: The proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, combined with local factors such as daytime warming and the entry of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, has favored heavy downpours with thunderstorms and scattered variable rainfall across the country this Tuesday. The heaviest rainfall in the south of the country accumulated 73 mm in Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, between 20 and 50 mm in the other areas of the South Pacific and the mountains of the Central Pacific. The Central Valley recorded 56 mm in Pavas, and between 25 and 50 mm in other areas of the West.

Forecast: During the late afternoon and early evening, heavy downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the South Pacific and Central Pacific, mainly in coastal areas during the early evening. Amounts between 40 and 60 mm are expected, with maximum rainfall of up to 90 mm over six-hour periods. Areas from Puerto Cortés, Quepos, Parrita, Jacó, and even Barranca in Puntarenas may be affected by these rains.

Isolated showers and rain are expected overnight and in the early morning hours in coastal areas and the surrounding mountains of the Caribbean Sea, as well as in areas south of the Northern Zone. Estimated rainfall is expected to range between 15 mm and 40 mm.

Warning: The South Pacific and Central Pacific have moderate to high soil saturation levels, between 75% and 95%. This situation increases the risk of flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.

• Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong winds occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, and other hazards. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
