Weather Warning

Instability after the passage of Tropical Wave #1

May 14, 2025
10:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical Wave #1 is located far from the national territory. However, after its passage, atmospheric instability persists in the region. This condition, together with increased activity in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and daytime warming, favors a rainy environment in several areas of the country. In addition, this morning, scattered showers and rain have been reported in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, with accumulated rainfall of less than 15 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: During the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the South Pacific, the Central Pacific, and around the Nicoya Peninsula, with accumulated rainfall between 30 mm and 70 mm over periods of 6 to 12 hours, and possible higher localized amounts. These rains may extend toward the coast overnight, especially during the early hours. Similar conditions remain possible in the Central Valley, especially in the west and north of the region, with estimated rainfall amounts between 15 mm and 60 mm over periods of 6 to 12 hours, and the possibility of higher localized amounts. Light rain cannot be ruled out in the early evening.

In the northern zone and the western Caribbean, rain and downpours may continue, especially in mountainous areas. Estimated accumulations range between 10 mm and 50 mm over periods of 6 to 12 hours.

Warning: Moderate/high soil saturation persists in the South Pacific and Central Pacific, the Sarapiquí Basin, the western sector of the Central Valley, and the General Valley. Be aware of the presence of a strong storm, where intense rain in short periods, electrical discharges, and downpours are likely to occur during these events.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
