Weather Warning

Tropical wave #7 over Costa Rica

June 22, 2025
09.45 a.m.

Discussion: The arrival of Tropical Wave 7 in the early hours of Sunday brought mostly cloudy conditions and rain in the early morning hours to the Northern Zone, the North Pacific, and the Central Pacific coasts, and to a lesser extent to the Central Valley, generating rainfall amounts between 30 mm and 50 mm, with highs of 80 mm in the last 12 hours.

Forecast: Rain will continue in the North Pacific for the remainder of the morning and will gradually spread to the rest of the Pacific regions, as well as to the western Central Valley, with accumulated rainfall between 10 and 30 mm.

During the afternoon and into the late evening hours, rain of varying intensity is expected in different regions of the country. The estimated amounts for the 6- to 12-hour periods are as follows:

  • North, Central, and South Pacific: between 30 mm and 60 mm, with highs of up to 80 mm.
  • Central Valley: Between 15 mm and 25 mm, with localized highs of up to 50 mm.
  • North Zone: Between 30 mm and 60 mm, with localized highs of up to 90 mm.
  • Northern and Southern Caribbean: Between 25 mm and 60 mm, with localized highs of up to 80 mm.

The axis of tropical wave #7 is estimated to reach the Pacific Ocean in the late afternoon. However, the Intertropical Convergence Zone—composed of low-pressure systems—will remain very active and close to Costa Rica. This will mean a considerable contribution of moisture and instability, facilitating cloud formation and rainfall at the beginning of this week in different regions of the country.

Warning: Special attention should be paid to the Nicoya Peninsula, the Northern Zone, and the South Pacific, as these areas have very high soil saturation levels between 85% and 95%, increasing the vulnerability to the risk of incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be cautious about possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
  • Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
