Weather Warning
Rainy activity this afternoon and early evening
May 04, 2025
10.45 a.m.
Discussion: The unstable atmospheric pattern continues today, along with high humidity, associated with the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. These conditions create an ideal environment for cloudiness and precipitation in the country.
Forecast: This afternoon and into the early evening, rain of varying intensity and showers with thunderstorms are expected in various regions of the country.
The heaviest rainfall and thunderstorms will occur in the Central and South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, and the Tempisque Valley. Accumulations of between 40 mm and 100 mm are estimated over a 6-hour period, with higher localized accumulations possible.
Meanwhile, isolated rain and showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Central Valley, the Northern Zone, and the Caribbean Mountains, with amounts between 30 and 60 mm over a 6-hour period.
Warning: The rains of recent days have caused soil saturation levels to reach high levels, between 85% and 95%, in the South and Central Pacific; while in the Central Valley, Sarapiquí Basin, and Nicoya Peninsula, they have reached around 50% and 75%. This situation increases the risk of flash flooding and/or landslides.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Take precautions due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
- Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
